Enforcement, After All These Years Despite the differences between the House and Senate immigration bills, both would make mandatory the online employment verification system called Basic Pilot, which checks new hires Social Security numbers and other information. In August, the Center hosed a panel on the subject, featuring an update on the system from Gerri Ratliff, Chief of the Verification Division at the Department of Homeland Security. The panel also included a demonstration of a private-sector solution making the system easier for business to use, from John Hermann, CEO of Form I-9 Compliance, the first company to be named a "designated agent" for employment verifications by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration. The panel, which was attended by a standing-room-only crowd, aired several times on C-SPAN and was covered by NPR and a number of print publications.
