Immigration Enforcement at Worksites on the Rise

November 1, 2006

The Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported that arrests in worksite enforcement investigations have increased significantly in the last few years.

The agency says it arrested 716 individuals on criminal charges (against both employers and employees) in worksite enforcement investigations during fiscal year 2006, up from 176 in fiscal year 2005. The agency also arrested 3,667 individuals on administrative charges this year.

The agency says total arrests made in ICE worksite enforcement cases during this year reached a level that was more than seven times greater than in 2002, the last full year of operations for U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service.

"What we will continue to do is to target those employers who willfully violate the law and who build businesses upon a model of behavior that assumes they will hire large numbers of illegal migrants to fill jobs in this country," Michael Chertoff, head of the Department of Homeland Security, said in a statement.

In April, the Department of Homeland Security unveiled a new phase of its enforcement immigration activities that will focus on employers. The enforcement strategy expands existing efforts to target employers of undocumented workers and immigration violators inside the country.
